Newport Club's Three-way Twinning Visit: Heidenheim 18/9/09 - 20/9/09

On Friday 18th September I set off with several members of the Newport Club and Edwina for Heidenheim, a town of 50,000 people in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. It is a familiar journey for us, as the Twinning has been taking place since 1987, which was the memorable year our planes were delayed by the great hurricane. The 'Twins' involved are Newport Gwent, Heidenheim-Giengen and the French club, St Etienne Est. Over the years we have carried out some useful international projects together, though the visit this year was more social - in fact very sociable - than business.

From the many pictures we took, I've posted a few. You can see a general view of the town taken from the castle tower and another of the wonderful new concert hall and conference complex. Also shots of me with the host president, Stephan Maurer, with District Governor Helmut Steeb 1830 and of the three of us together. Sebastien Desitter, President of St Etienne Est, my own President, Mike Shukman of Newport, and Stephan can also be seen delivering their speeches at the marvellous dinner we enjoyed on Saturday evening in a sympathetically converted former loco shed!

Note some of the ties in the photos. The famous Pontllanfraith tie is being worn by our good friend Jean-Paul Royet, formerly of the Rotary Club of St Etienne Est, now of the Rotary Club of Aubonne, Switzerland. Helmut's emergency DG tie, called into service while the 'John Kenny special' was at the dry cleaners, looks suspiciously like the current 1150 tie. Good taste is obviously international!
