Sunday 20th June - Opening Ceremony of the Convention

Breakfast in the Hyatt was extortionate so we bought what we needed in the supermarket and looked after ourselves in our room. We went to the Interfaith Service in the morning. David M was officiating and Martin G gave an interesting look at the commandments from the Jewish perspective. Our tickets were for the afternoon Opening Ceremony, so we spent the morning in the House of Friendship - Jim was still on point duty but went out of his way to show us that he had a clean shirt on and had not been there all night. I found the Internet Cafe and we had lunch. Edwina met up with Helmut, Governor of the District in Germany where our twinned club is located who we met in Heidenheim last Autumn. We set off early to get decent seats at the Opening Ceremony in the Bell Centre, an ice rink in its normal life, using the Metro which was free to delegates at the start and finish of the plenary sessions.

After the usual formalities we were entertained by Celtic Thunder and a gospel choir. Celtic Thunder are a mix of celtic themes with six fine vocalists. Dinner was at the Trois Brasseurs, otherwise known as the three bras, where a large RIBI contingent sat at table. An enjoyable evening spoilt by cold food which the restaurant dealt with by giving us free beer and coffee - not such a bad deal.
