4th June - Back from Tallinn

A few days in the very picturesque old town of Tallinn was well worth the hike to Stanstead and the three hour flight. We went out via Riga, the capital city of Latvia, and enjoyed Monday morning having a whistle stop tour of the historic parts of the city before the five hour drive to Tallinn. The journey was dominated by trees, lots of trees, which rather dominated the rolling view out of the coach window. The Soviets built the roads in dead straight lines and they are mostly single track, although some European money has been spent on getting rid of the Soviet rough concrete surfaces. We did come across some of these old roads which forced the coach driver to slow down.

You can see from the photos that Riga and Tallinn have lots to offer the tourist. I was there with Cwmbran Baroque Singers on their concert tour, acting as bag-man for Edwina. We did visit the beach town of Parnu and a castle to the east of Tallin.

Estonia is a very small country, the size of a large English county, and has been dominated by stronger neighbours in the past. Worth a visit bur remember it is well to the north and at this time of the year there is only a couple of hours of darkness. It can be a little cool even when the sun shines.
