28th January - Literacy Talk at Cwmbran Vale
Mark Provis, Chief Education Officer for Torfaen County Borough, was the speaker at Cwmbran Vale this evening. His subject was literacy and how to tackle the 28% functional illiteracy rate in Wales and in particular in this authority. What a fascinating presentation he gave, suggesting that developing a child's chances of becoming functionally literate should start at the prenatal stage by educating parents. He also said that the lack of spoken interaction between mothers and their babies should be picked up by Health Visitors who in turn should alert other local services to help out. There are a number of novel schemes being developed and used in schools which are producing real improvements. There was lots more but this is far too big a subject to condense here. It does demonstrate that this is an area that we should be involved with. Grateful thanks to President Stuart and Com & Voc RGL Geoff for the invite.
