19th June Kite's Feeding at Rhayader
We had to go up to Rhayader on the morning of Friday 19th June and on the way home we had lunch in the old Workhouse. It has a stream running through the building, where the inmates washed their feet, which is now full of ornamental fish. Afterwards we went on to see the Red Kites being fed at a nearby farm. They get a supplement of beef or lamb at 1500hrs every day and here you see them flying in to pick up the food with their feet. They eat on the wing and make a number of passes, some unsuccessful. There are crows and a couple of buzzards present as well and the crows are a signal to the Kites that all is well on the ground. The Buzzards just land and feed on the ground, ducking and diving as the Kites come flying in. This was quite a spectacle which is difficult to capture as a picture. My guess is that there were more than 100 Kites circling around waiting for the food to be put out.
